Holy Redeemer (http://www.holyredeemerpdx.org/) has been a landmark in its North Portland Piedmont neighborhood for over 100 years. The present church was built in 1926, the rectory in 1910, and the school in 1952. A new school building, the first LEED certified green building in the nation by a Catholic School, was built in 2005. Holy Redeemer has an ambitious plan to disconnect downspouts from their gym roof, create a pair of 610 sq ft pocket swales with native plants to infiltrate roof runoff, remove an unused 5,700 sq ft gravel-covered strip, and install a community garden and education space for their school. In addition, they hope to install two 5,000 gallon water storage tanks to capture and utilize roof runoff for garden irrigation needs, and to install bioswales in other corners of the parking lot. Holy Redeemer has also been awarded a 2009 BES CWSP grant and we are mutual partners on each other’s projects.
