Small, scrappy, irreverent, and focused: Depave is a unique nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, that promotes the transformation of over-paved places. We engage communities to reconnect urban spaces to nature through cutting-edge landscape intervention. We work with public and private schools, communities of faith, and community-centered organizations to remove asphalt and replace it with gardens, playgrounds, bioswales or green spaces. When these spaces are transformed,they reduce stormwater pollution and the urban heat island effect, and support environmental education, community engagement, nature-play, and urban agriculture.
Reporting to a highly engaged Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for overall strategic and operational excellence, ensuring effective implementation of fiscal operations, fundraising, marketing, human resources, program strategies and project implementation. The ED is also responsible for managing staff, currently one half-time Project & Volunteer Coordinator.
This position covers a diverse range of responsibilities that advance Depave’s mission within, and beyond,the Portland metro area. Responsibilities, include (but are not limited to):
Communication & Relationship Management
Serve as a spokesperson in the community. Cultivate and maintain exceptional, transparent and trusted working relationships with outside agencies, funders, project partners and political leaders in order to elevate and expand the organization’s work.
Maintain and manage the organization’s website, communications and outreach initiatives.
Fundraising & Financial Management
The ED is responsible for developing the organization’s annual budget, managing its finances and providing regular reports for the Board of Directors. Strategically diversify and expand funding sources. Oversee revenue-generating activities, including foundation/corporate/government grants, fundraising events, special appeals and other campaigns.
Actively interface with Depave’s Salesforce database. Ensure donor and constituent records are maintained accurately. Input and track specific cultivation, solicitation and stewardship actions in a timely manner.
Provide support to the Board of Directors in planning, developing and achieving board-led fundraising activities and goals.
Leadership & Management
In collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, lead and manage a successful, evolving organization that upholds the Mission, Vision & Values of Depave. Provide a strong leadership presence while fostering a dynamic, innovative, values-driven environment for all.
Ensure ongoing strategic planning, programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent, high-quality delivery of projects and programs.
Ensure the employment, supervision and ongoing training of productive, professional and culturally proficient staff and volunteers.
Engage with the Board to explore opportunities to grow the organization beyond our current project-based work in Portland.
Project Outreach, Planning & Implementation
Conduct targeted outreach activities to support project development. Work with staff, project partners funders, volunteers and other stakeholders to plan and execute depaving projects. Oversee all project implementation work. This requires getting your hands dirty and doing some occasional heavy lifting.
Desired Qualifications & Characteristics
A deep appreciation for the mission and values of Depave.
Experience in landscape design, naturescaping and construction (or similar) with the ability to manage contractors and volunteers.
Strong project management, administrative and organizational skills including developing and managing budgets.
At least five years of progressively responsible management experience with a strong track record of developing and executing strategies for growth.
At least three years of fund development, fundraising, and/or other revenue-generating experience. Familiarity with local and regional private and public funding sources.
Demonstrated willingness, ability and success in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors.
Experience in designing, implementing and articulating strategic organizational development plans and operational budgets.
Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach, supervise and develop staff.
Innovation in spirit, values-driven, self-directed, confident and action oriented. Exceptional interpersonal and culturally proficient communication skills. Experience and comfort with public speaking.
Adaptable, accessible, compassionate and professional in demeanor.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently and responsibly, but also with a collaborative nature.
Proficiency interacting with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, constituent management databases and financial management software.
A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Preferred Additional Knowledge, Skills or Experience
Experience using Salesforce software and maintaining a Web presence, preferably with WordPress.
Coursework or training in business development, nonprofit management, fundraising, marketing and/or other related fields.
Knowledge of watershed health and Pacific Northwest plants.
Experience with Environmental Justice work, and/or connections to Portland communities or community organizations in areas that have the least greenspace.
Competency in Spanish or a language other than English relevant to the Portland Metro area.
Compensation & Details
The salary range is $40,000 – $55,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, Depave provides $200 per month contribution toward health insurance or other health expenses and an $80 monthly personal technology reimbursement for use of your own phone and internet.
Depave does not have a full-time office; this position works from home, with opportunity for occasional use of an office space for meetings. A small pickup truck is available for Depave-related use.
The position requires frequent weekend work (mostly during the summer and fall seasons) and some evening work (for board and committee meetings). Otherwise, the schedule is very flexible provided you are able to effectively communicate with partners and colleagues who work during normal business hours.
