Saturday October 9 at the M&M Marketplace Depave & Green-up was a site to see, a wonder to witness.

An energetic army of 150 volunteers assaulted asphalt, tore up turf, and transformed the outside of Hillsboro’s Multicultural Marketplace by planting and mulching hundreds of native shrubs and pollinator plants in rain gardens and elsewhere, installing a pervious outdoor vendor patio, and preparing the grounds for the installation of a pergola for the cafe, outdoor artwork, and flowering trees along side streets.

Legions of volunteers converged from numerous organizations and businesses including Latter Day Saints Church, INTEL, DANZA, City of Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council, Salesforce, and more, lending their labor and passion as part of Hillsboro’s HillsDoer Day. Jose Luis and his crew from Superior Hardscape Specialists LLC volunteered their labor to install pervious patio.

Music provided by Brotherman and performances by Huehca Omeyocan Aztec Dancers and Papalolet Ballet Folkloric Dance entertained volunteers who were fed by food vouchers for M&M Marketplace vendors. Check Samantha Swindlers Oregonian article and check out her short video.

All told volunteers depaved roughly 1000 square feet of pavement and planted and mulched over 4000 square feet of bioswale and green strip frontage. But far more than the raw numbers, Saturday’s event made a new place and built lasting new relationships in the community. The M&M Market Place Depave and Green UP could not have happened without the leadership of the site host and M&M owner Jaime Miranda (right) and former Depave ED Eric Roswall. The relationships they forged catalyzed many other positive connections and collaborations that were on full display at Saturday’s event.

Major funding came from Metro and Clean Water Services with additional support from R&H Construction, Superior Hardscape Specialists, KPFF, and Dinsdale Nursery.

A big thank you to Tualatin Soil & Water Conservation District for granting the project $5500 in last minute funding to help cover cost overruns.

We still have about $3500 in unpaid expenses that individuals can help cover by giving to the Make M&M Marketplace Depave Happen crowd fund by October 16. Thank you for everyone who has given to the crowd fund so far.

Finally, as always, we want to thank our spectacular Depave volunteer leaders and who are essential in making Depave and events like Saturday’s M&M Marketplace Depave & Green-up a rocking success! Thanks you Eder Katembwe, Matthew Mills, Kyle Ellenfeldt, Daniel Schick, Ray Lipin, Jason Bergstrom, Melissa Bockwinkel, Rosa Lehman, Nick LaRue, Jason Meketa, Lauri Bunce, Carlos Nunez, Michele Quinard, Matt Reimer, Brynn Eiffler, Dan Zinder, and Chris Lazarus!
