A dedicated crew of depavers kicked asphalt on this rad pilot at the Sylvania campus of Portland Community College. The project, a part of Tualatin Riverkeeper’s 5,000 Acres Initiative, is an effort to pioneer low impact approaches to reduce stormwater runoff from the 5,000+ acres of parking lots in Oregon’s Tualatin River Basin. This depave removed pavement in order to install new tree wells within the parking lot to reduce runoff, without reducing parking capacity. Innovative, absorptive tree wells will use “structural soil” to support the weight of cars and pavement yet give tree roots room to grow.
